En 1978, \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e2ge de 27 ans, il devient d\u00e9put\u00e9.<br\/>En 1993, Michel Barnier entre dans le gouvernement d&rsquo;Edouard Balladur comme ministre de l&rsquo;Environnement puis ministre d\u00e9l\u00e9gu\u00e9 aux Affaires europ\u00e9ennes. Michel Barnier est ensuite nomm\u00e9 Commissaire europ\u00e9en en 1999, charg\u00e9 de la r\u00e9forme de la politique r\u00e9gionale et de la politique de coh\u00e9sion, ainsi que de la r\u00e9forme des institutions et de la Convention europ\u00e9enne sur l&rsquo;avenir de l&rsquo;Union.<br\/>Il devient ministre des Affaires \u00e9trang\u00e8res en 2004 et ministre de l&rsquo;Agriculture en 2007.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En 2010, il est nomm\u00e9 commissaire europ\u00e9en charg\u00e9 du march\u00e9 int\u00e9rieur et des services.
