“The easing of sanctions is a necessary measure to prevent the inability of the population to work from leading to chaos and civil war. We are helping Syria to move forward,” is how EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas commented on Brussels’ position on Syria during a press conference on the sidelines of the Foreign Affairs Council yesterday. European support for the new Syrian government will continue through financial aid and a gradual easing of sanctions, provided that the rights of all citizens are respected and those responsible for the recent violence are prosecuted.
